JAL Double Miles on Frankfurt Route: 2x Earnings Through August 31

April 5, 2026 · 5 min read

JAL almost never does route-specific mileage promotions. That alone should make you pay attention.

From May 19 through August 31, 2026, Japan Airlines is offering double Mileage Bank miles on its Tokyo to Frankfurt service. The promotion covers both Haneda and Narita departures, round trip or one way, in every cabin. Registration is required before your first flight. This is not a systemwide campaign. It is a single route. And that tells us something.

Why Frankfurt, Why Now

JAL’s Frankfurt route has been under pressure for years. Lufthansa dominates the corridor with multiple daily frequencies. ANA competes aggressively with its own Tokyo-Frankfurt service. The route’s load factors have reportedly lagged behind JAL’s other European destinations like London and Paris, where premium demand from financial services keeps cabins full.

Offering double miles during peak summer, when seats should theoretically fill themselves, suggests JAL is fighting for share. This is a capacity concern signal, not a loyalty gift.

The Math: What 2x Actually Yields

Tokyo to Frankfurt is approximately 5,840 statute miles one way, or 11,680 miles round trip. JAL Mileage Bank earning rates vary by fare class. Here is what the 2x multiplier does to your total haul on a round trip:

Fare ClassBase Earn RateNormal RT Miles2x Promo RT MilesTypical RT FareMiles per Dollar
First (F)150%17,52035,040$9,5003.7
Business (J)125%14,60029,200$4,8006.1
Prem Economy (W)100%11,68023,360$2,20010.6
Full Economy (Y/B)100%11,68023,360$1,40016.7
Discount Economy (H/K)70%8,17616,352$80020.4
Deep Discount (L/Q)50%5,84011,680$65018.0

That discount economy number is remarkable. At 20.4 miles per dollar on an $800 sale fare, you are earning at a rate that would make credit card sign-up bonuses jealous. Even deep discount fares at 18.0 miles per dollar outperform the typical 5x category bonus card by a factor of three.

What Are Those Miles Worth?

JAL Mileage Bank miles carry a reasonable redemption value of 1.0 to 1.5 cpp depending on how you use them. Domestic Japan awards (Tokyo to Osaka at 6,000 miles one way) stretch closer to 2.0 cpp during peak pricing. International partner awards through oneworld can hit 1.3 to 1.5 cpp on long haul business class.

If we conservatively value JAL miles at 1.2 cpp, here is your effective rebate on a round trip ticket:

  • Discount Economy ($800): 16,352 miles = $196 value = 24.5% rebate
  • Full Economy ($1,400): 23,360 miles = $280 value = 20.0% rebate
  • Premium Economy ($2,200): 23,360 miles = $280 value = 12.7% rebate
  • Business ($4,800): 29,200 miles = $350 value = 7.3% rebate

A 24.5% effective rebate on an economy ticket is extraordinary for a mileage promotion. For context, even aggressive credit card earn rates of 5x on flights at 1.5 cpp transfer value only yield a 7.5% return.

Should You Credit Elsewhere?

This is the key question. If you normally credit JAL flights to British Airways Avios or American AAdvantage through oneworld, you would forgo this bonus entirely. The 2x multiplier only applies to JAL Mileage Bank.

Consider: a discount economy round trip credited to BA Avios would earn roughly 7,000 to 8,000 Avios (depending on the fare class mapping). That same flight credited to JAL Mileage Bank during this promo earns 16,352 miles. Even accounting for BA’s strong off-peak redemptions, which we covered in our British Airways Avios off-peak calendar analysis, the JAL earn rate here is simply better math.

If you are collecting ANA miles for their round the world sweet spots, the calculus changes. But ANA Mileage Club does not earn on JAL metal anyway, so this is moot for Star Alliance loyalists.

Registration and Fine Print

JAL requires advance registration through the Mileage Bank portal or app. You must register before your first qualifying flight. Connecting flights beyond Frankfurt do not count. Only the Tokyo to Frankfurt segment (and return) earns the bonus. Codeshare flights operated by other carriers are excluded.

The promotional period runs May 19 through August 31, 2026. That is 15 weeks of eligibility. If you have two or three round trips planned during summer, the miles stack quickly. Two discount economy round trips would net you 32,704 bonus miles on top of your base earn, enough for a JAL domestic round trip award with miles to spare.

Bottom Line

This promotion is a genuine outlier. Route-specific double miles from JAL happen maybe once a year, and they almost always signal competitive anxiety on the route. That is JAL’s problem, not yours.

If you are flying Tokyo to Frankfurt between late May and the end of August, register immediately and credit to Mileage Bank. Discount economy fares yield 20+ miles per dollar at 2x, delivering a 24.5% effective rebate at conservative mile valuations. Premium cabin flyers benefit less on a percentage basis but still pocket 29,200 to 35,040 miles round trip.

The only scenario where you skip this: you are fewer than 10,000 miles from hitting a status threshold with another oneworld carrier and need the credit there. Everyone else should take the free miles.

Register before you fly. Do not assume it is automatic. It is not.
