Act now: arbitrage opportunities exist before market adjusts.” categories: [“Credit Cards”] tags: [“Amex”, “Devaluation”, “Singapore”, “Emirates Skywards”, “Transfer Partners”] draft: false, -
Singapore Amex holders just got hit with the worst transfer partner devaluation I’ve seen in 20 years. While US cardholders complain about 20% cuts, Singapore is getting absolutely destroyed with up to 50% slashes to Emirates Skywards.
Effective April 30, 2026, Amex Singapore will require 800 Membership Rewards points for 400 Emirates miles. That’s double the current 400:400 rate. Let that sink in: your Emirates transfers just became twice as expensive overnight.
The Numbers Are Brutal
Here’s the damage across major partners:
| Transfer Partner | Old Rate | New Rate | Devaluation | |, , , , , , , , -|, , , , , |, , , , , |, , , , , , -| | Emirates Skywards | 400:400 | 800:400 | -50% | | Etihad Guest | 450:400 | 800:400 | -44% | | Qatar Privilege | 400:400 | 500:400 | -20% | | Asia Miles | 400:400 | 450:400 | -11% | | KrisFlyer | 400:250 | 400:250 | No change |
The Emirates cut hurts the most. At the old rate, 160,000 MR got you 160,000 Skywards miles, enough for JFK-DXB-SIN round trip in First. Now? You’ll need 320,000 MR for the same redemption.
Why This Creates an Arbitrage Play
Here’s what Amex Singapore doesn’t want you to figure out: Emirates First availability hasn’t changed. The seats are still there. But Singapore MR holders will pay twice as much while other programs remain untouched.
Compare Emirates First redemption costs after April 30:
- Via Amex Singapore MR: 320,000 points
- Via Amex US MR to Aeroplan: 110,000 points
- Via Chase UR to United: 121,000 points
- Via Citi TYP to Emirates: 160,000 points
See the opportunity? Book Emirates metal through Star Alliance partners at half the cost. Those Alaska sweet spots suddenly look brilliant by comparison.
The Math Behind the Massacre
Let’s calculate the new cost per point (cpp) impact. Assuming Emirates miles are worth 1.8 cents each:
Before devaluation:
- 400 MR = 400 Skywards = $7.20 value
- Effective value: 1.8 cpp
After devaluation:
- 800 MR = 400 Skywards = $7.20 value
- Effective value: 0.9 cpp
Your Membership Rewards just lost half their value for Emirates redemptions. At 0.9 cpp, you’re better off using cashback cards.
What About US Cardholders?
US Amex holders face their own cuts, but nowhere near Singapore’s bloodbath:
- Emirates: 1000:1000 becomes 1200:1000 (20% devaluation)
- Etihad: 1000:1000 becomes 1200:1000 (20% devaluation)
- Qatar: No change
At 20% versus 50%, US cardholders should count their blessings. Though knowing Amex, this is probably just round one.
Your 30-Day Action Plan
Calculate your Emirates needs for the next 18 months. Transfer now at 400:400 while you can.
Check alternative programs. Capital One transfers to Emirates at 1:1. Citi maintains 1:1. Both beat post-devaluation Amex rates.
Consider KrisFlyer pivots. With no devaluation there, 400 MR still gets 250 KF miles. Book Emirates First for 97,500 KF miles versus 160,000 Skywards.
Lock in partner awards now. Even if you’re not ready to travel, speculatively transfer for future redemptions. Emirates miles last 3 years.
Remember when Marriott tried a 40% bonus that was actually overpriced? This is worse. This is Amex telling Singapore cardholders their points are worth half of what Americans get.
Bottom Line
This isn’t a devaluation; it’s a dismantling. Singapore Amex MR holders have exactly 30 days to salvage value from their Emirates transfers before the hammer drops. After April 30, your best move is booking Emirates through other Star Alliance programs or pivoting entirely to KrisFlyer.
The 50% cut to Emirates represents the steepest transfer partner devaluation in recent memory. While Hilton’s double points promotions try to add value, Amex Singapore is aggressively destroying it.
Transfer now. Book later. Or watch half your value disappear on May 1.
